A LIGHT DINNER FOR DRAGONS

There’s an ancient tale of Selendine, a haughty White Dragon, who lingered one day by a reflecting pool at the edge of the sea, on her southbound flight to charm a mate.

“My complexion is luminous, but more brilliance would certainly enchant Roan the Red,” she rumbled aloud.

A curious zephyr eavesdropped nearby as the vain beast cast aside ideas until finally roaring with satisfaction. Tonight, she would eat the stars for supper!

The zephyr whiffled at the thought of being plunged into utter darkness as the dragon dined, and blustered off to tell North Wind.

North was aghast. He called a consortium that plotted to thwart her. Cloud dancers began to whirl as winds gusted, knitting cumulus formations into a wide netting to discharge the stars to safety.

At nightfall, as the stars opened their eyes, mighty gales from the north, east, south and west swept them all into the cloudy webbing and out to sea, where a great blue Orca opened his yawning mouth. The stars were emptied in and his jaws snapped shut.

Selendine awoke from her nap, blinking in inky darkness. Where was her prey? Not one star twinkled above. Confused, she roared angrily, raised her great silvery wings and sailed off, fated to win the Red Dragon with her very own opalescent wiles.

The Orca took a deep breath and from his spout, he blew the stars back into the sky. And that, my children, is why stars still shine brightly over your heads tonight.
